Visual Arts
Although art making is an important aspect of the Visual Arts curriculum I am very passionate about making sure my lessons also expose students to the technical language of art, art history, art appreciation and give students time to reflect on their art making through creating written and oral texts such as artist statements, reflections and procedures. When teaching across the school I used a thematic approach using an overarching theme which reflect the school calendar, inquiry topics and the student's context. For example in Term One of 2020 I used the theme of identity, in Term One of 2021 I used the theme of Diversity. After deciding on a theme I choose artists and art periods which relate to the theme. All students in the school will explore the same artists. In the Prep-Grade 2 classes I have a strong focus on using picture books. In Grade 3/4 I start to include a combination of literary and informative genres. In Grade 5/6 I use mainly informative genres to expose students to complex and technical language.

Due to COVID-19 in 2020 we couldn't have out physical Art Show. Instead I created a virtual exhibition.
In Grades Prep and One students have learnt about french impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh, and how he demonstrated time in his artworks by depicting the different seasons of: summer, autumn, winter, and spring. They created their own standing tree using the colours associated with each season, and different types of line inspired by Van Gogh’s obvious brush strokes. Tying in with Science Week, students investigated how a life cycle of a frog demonstrates time. They used resources they had at home to create a sculpture of each phase of a frog’s life. Students learnt about the french impressionist artist Claude Monet, who is well known for his dreamy artworks of his vibrant gardens and lily pads. Students created their own Lily pad using watercolour paint (or markers/ink) and recreated Monet’s style by layering different shades of green. |
Students learnt about the Term 3 theme of 'Time' through Van Gogh's impressions of the seasons.
Students created their own impressions of the seasons, and explored different Van Gogh line techniques by creating a paper tree sculpture.
A Prep Art Activity I created which built on the students understanding of adjectives to describe their own dragon (Writing). They then made their dragon to match their descriptions.
A worked example dragon.

I like to display examples of complete work, on the board so students can come and examine what a finished piece may look like.
Artistic Statement for students to reflect on their artwork.
Collage artwork depiction of trees using old magazine pages.
Year 1/2 students made sculptures of the characters from a book (Book Week) using magic clay.
